Tax-aware retirement planning

The order and timing of retirement income decisions can affect what you keep after taxes. From our San Diego office, we help clients nationwide organize tax questions around Social Security, pensions, retirement accounts, and Medicare premiums. We can coordinate planning decisions with your tax professional.

How we work through tax questions

We begin with your expected income sources and the decisions you are considering. Together, we can compare possible withdrawal sequences and income timing using clearly stated assumptions. This helps you see which questions need a closer review with your CPA or tax preparer.

For example, a larger IRA withdrawal or Roth conversion may affect taxable income and, two years later, Medicare IRMAA. The timing and effect depend on your individual circumstances. Our IRMAA calculator and tax reference and estimator are starting points for discussion, not a tax return or a personalized tax calculation.

We can help you prepare questions and coordinate the retirement plan with your tax professional. We do not prepare tax returns or provide legal or tax advice through this website.

How we can help

  • Map expected income from Social Security, pensions, IRAs, TSP or 401(k) accounts, and other savings.
  • Review how withdrawal timing, required distributions, and potential Roth conversions may affect your planning questions.
  • Consider how a change in income could affect Medicare premiums through IRMAA.
  • Identify assumptions to confirm with your tax professional before acting.

Questions to consider

Which accounts will supply income in retirement, when might required distributions begin, and could a change in income affect Medicare premiums? Review potential tax effects with your tax professional before making a withdrawal or conversion decision.

We start with your circumstances. A calculator or general example cannot determine which product or strategy is appropriate for you.
